Clans uniting, thousands of brave soldiers rushing to the opponent’s castles, cards are played, and tables are turned. We’re reviewing the latest title from the ultra successful developer studio famous for spending millions for advertisement for their games, Supercell. Let’s see what they have made this time.
The MOBA gaming genre brought the possibility to interact with other players in battle real time; the guys from Supercell have seen the opportunity and stepped in. The global phenomena started with Clash of Clans, connecting millions of gamers, creating a community where virtual warfare on our smartphone screens. The goal is the same – build an empire, and raze the opponent’s castle. Clash Royale brings the element of real-time battles between the opponents, the element we’ve all been waiting for. January 2nd was the release of the first beta, available to the selected markets, and the full version was expected two months later. During those two months, the game was available on iOS only.
March 2nd finally came, and the game was released globally on Android. The speculations around the web stated that this game might be Clash of Clans 2, but the Finland developers denied them. Clash Royale is a full real-time battle with two players simultaneously participating in the battlefield. The unique mix of role-playing, strategy and card battles are definitely a step forward in the industry, raising the bar.
Clash Royale Design: A Familiar, Yet Improved Look
The game comes from the same studio, so we expected the cartooned graphics and characters. As a Clash of Clans player, you’ll get to see a lot of familiar faces: Giants, Goblins, Wizards, Knights, and they are all designed in that Clash fashion. The terrain design, the looks of menus, interface animations and buttons look and perform amazingly. In-game models look pretty much the same as in Clash of Clans (with some variations though), and they look superb. I particularly liked the Ice Wizard and the Prince.
Playing Clash Royale, you get a classic strategy view; you use your troops, your towers, castle, spells and items from above by pulling cards. Animations of explosions, fighting, and damage dealing are smooth and entertaining. The game is rated Pegi 7, which means mild violence and fighting are included in the game.
The design of this game is familiar to masses, and you can definitely see the resemblance to the predecessor. (Clash Royale is a separate game, with different developers’ teams inside the company working on them) From the design standpoint, the game looks beautiful; the cartooned graphics are the important part of the brand, and they are made in high-quality.
The Clash Royale Gameplay: Where Real-Time Strategy Meets the Clash Universe
This is where the game shines the brightest. Live battles same as in MOBA (Mobile Online Battle Arena) games, role-playing and card-playing all combined to provide a unique experience of Clash Royale. You get to build your deck of cards, which are sorted into three classes: Troops, Buildings, and Spells. You can have Common, Rare, and Epic cards. The live match happens between two players, each having two towers and a King Tower and their own deck, made from the cards the player possesses at the moment. You have your Elixir pool which slowly regenerates, resembling ‘mana’ that is required to play a particular card, and when you have enough Elixir, you’re able to drag and drop your card in the field. When placed, a unit will start to progress towards the enemy castle in an attempt to destroy it.
The gameplay is addictive. You’ll get hooked up to Clash Royale quickly, and it won’t let you go that easily. Defeating an opponent in battle will require strategic planning, some good reflexes, and quick thinking. We will cover the whole segment of Clash Royale tactics later.

When two players of same skill level face of in the battlefield, the match can be really intense, and minor details might decide the winner of the match. If you haven’t tried it yet, I can tell you that those three minutes can be really exciting.
When you defeat an opponent, you’ll receive a reward in a form of a chest which contains cards, gold and gems. The thing is, there is a different time required to open the chests, as there are several types of those in the game; you’ll need 15 sec for wooden, 3 hours for silver, 8 hours for golden, and 12 hours to open the magical chest.
You level your cards, your king’s tower, unlock trophies and new maps, and progress in strength and effectiveness in battle and global rank, and join clans to participate in global warfare. As we are used to, real money will get you going up in ranks much faster, as it removes the chest-unlocking timer with gems, and gems are earned hard, but easily obtained by flashing out your credit card.
Clash Royale Pros & Cons – The Verdict
After some time spent playing Clash Royale, I can say that the pros & cons are as expected. The graphics, the great gameplay, and a plethora of features are this game’s strong side. On the other hand, you won’t go really high unless you spend some bucks. For example, here’s the comparison how much you can get while waiting for chests, and when you pay. This goes to the level where players with deeper pockets can overpower the ones without the budget for fancy cards and big sack of gems. Here are the prices of gems in the game:
As you can see, the prices are standard. As you progress in the game, the gems will become a necessity. Joining clans, fighting in ranked matches are features of advanced gaming with Clash Royale – we’ll cover them in our guide later.
Clash Royale is an unstoppable force that will make you spend hours battling, collecting, unlocking, and potentially purchasing various items and services throughout the game. It’s addictive, exciting, intense, and in the same time genius, beautiful, and super fun.
